About the author

An award-winning educator, researcher, communicator, and leader, Dr. Maria Keckler serves as Faculty Research Fellow and Director of Communications and Strategy for International Affairs at San Diego State University. She is also the founder of Keckler and Co, a research and advisory firm that works with organizations to develop tools and strategies to foster kinder cultures and spaces where employees love to do great work. With a deep focus on empathy and story-science integration, her teaching and research interests cover the domains of cultural humility and empathy in healthcare, immersive learning, inclusive and ethical teaching, educational leadership, and innovations in education. Maria's research is informed by her exploration of evidence-based approaches to tackle declining empathy in healthcare and the world at large. A first generation Mexican immigrant with a multi-cultural heritage, Maria is a relatable and inspiring speaker across a diverse range of topics, settings, and audiences. Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, she skillfully translates scientific research into thoughtful, meaningful, and accessible insights that provide fresh perspectives on subjects including culture transformation, communicative leadership, strategic communication, personal and professional development, people-centered leadership, people-centered healthcare, compassionate entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and life transitions. She holds a Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis on preparing college professors of the future.
